Container

Rooted in the rich artistic tradition of the Chokwe people, this tobacco or hemp container embodies the synthesis of utility and sacred symbolism. Its anthropomorphic form goes beyond mere functionality, transforming into a container that connects the material with the spiritual. The striking features—the elongated neck, finely incised coiffure, and stylized scarification marks along the torso—reflect ideals of beauty, status, and ancestral reverence in Chokwe society. The confident stance of the female figure, with slightly bent knees and firmly planted feet, conveys a dynamic vitality, as if captured mid-motion.

Particularly noteworthy are the figure’s angular arms and the geometric patterns carved into the back. They emphasize both strength and stylistic precision, hallmarks of Chokwe artists. The scarification marks, meticulously carved into the surface, are more than decorative; they symbolize rites of passage and social identity. The dark, glossy patina from continuous use speaks of the figure's important role, both in daily life and ritual contexts.

Compared to most known mortars or containers of this type, where the figure carries the mortar like a small barrel on its head, this example is especially remarkable. Here, the body itself forms the container or mortar, a feature found in relatively few examples. This rare design underscores the uniqueness of the piece, highlighting it as an outstanding example of the creative diversity within Chokwe art.
