Oyo-Ibeji

This Ibeji twin figure from the Oyo State is a significant and ancient piece, initially characterized by the characteristic features typical of Oyo Ibeji figures. These features include the distinctive hairstyle, the detailed eyelashes, the shape and positioning of the nose and breasts, the bead adornments, and the specific posture of the arms and hands. While it seems quite closely with other figures of its type, this particular Ibeji stands out immediately and clearly due to its exceptional craftsmanship and striking presence and beauty.

The figure exudes a majestic aura, indicative of masterful carving. It is adorned more richly than is usual for Oyo Ibeji figures, a testament to the family's wealth and the high degree of reverence for the deceased girl. The patina on the sculpture and its adornments suggests considerable age and long-term ritual offerings. The eyelashes around the eyes have partially worn away, a result of decades of affectionate handling.
